Maple Bacon Cake Donuts

This is the recipe that I have been excited about all week. Maple bacon cake donuts. I ordered a donut mould online and it came in yesterday!

For this recipe, you will need:20170404_193714
2 1/3 cups flour
4 2/3 Tbsp corn starch
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup oil
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk

Mix your ingredients together. This will be a wet batter, not a dough.
Remember what I said about a certain order making the batter smoother? I didn’t do that. But I did have a whisk, so I got it smooth eventually!20170404_200948

Since I was making Maple BACON donuts, I also needed to make some bacon! 20170404_200951

Chop it up and mix it into the batter too. Mmmmm…20170404_201246

Now you can ago ahead and pour the batter into your donut moulds.
(In theory) You can also add more flour and make a dough for frying these. I plan to try that method next time to see if I get more of the traditional donut texture.

Pop your donuts in the oven at 425°F for about 20 minutes.20170404_205016

Now chop up more bacon!20170404_205004

While those are baking, you can use this time to make the glaze. I took 2/3 cup sugar and mixed it with 1/4 half-n-half. Stir that over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Now add maple syrup to taste. Yum.20170404_205009This particular glaze will stay sticky on your donuts, but it is DELICIOUS.

When the donuts are done, turn them out onto a cooling rack.

When they are cool, you can go ahead and dip them into the glaze. You can also pour the glaze over the top but it’s a lot messier and not as pretty. 20170404_205655

Now, that second batch of bacon you chopped? Put it on top. Right onto the glaze.20170404_205914

These donuts are cakier than I would have liked, but they were still delicious. I will be tweaking the recipe to see if I can get the texture right, but I’d say it’s not bad for my first time ever making donuts.

Also It is a very basic batter. Feel free to add cinnamon, nutmeg, or whatever else you want to it. 20170404_211234
